Oklahoma Class B boys basketball: Varnum holds off Roff, wins state championship in overtime
Martell Davis wasn’t sure whether he made the basket.
The senior guard at Varnum had stripped the ball on the defensive end of the floor and immediately began sprinting toward his basket. He received the outlet pass with his right hand and took one dribble before rising for a layup.
Roff’s Trayson Miller was trailing, and he rose shortly after Davis did. Miller collided into Davis, and the two went crashing into the base of the goal, but not before Davis could get his layup off.
It dropped through the net. Varnum’s bench and fans behind it erupted. Davis twice motioned asking whether it went in before realizing it had. He quickly hopped up before screaming and giving a fist pump.
Davis’ steal and score came at a pivotal time in top-ranked Varnum’s 61-56 overtime win against No. 2 Roff in the Class B state championship game Saturday at State Fair Arena. The tally gave Varnum a late cushion in overtime, preventing Roff from tying it late, as it had in the fourth quarter.
“I think he has been preparing for that moment his entire life,” Varnum senior Terrance Madkins said of Davis’ layup. “Every practice, he be making those because he’s that man. That’s Martell Davis for you.”
Davis led all scorers with 20 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals.
The win gave Varnum its first state championship in school history, and this year was the first time it won a state tournament game.

Varnum (24-3 overall) led 40-28 heading into the fourth quarter, but Roff had yet to make its run. Miller was able to get to the free-throw line and had five points in the quarter. Senior Coby Simon caught fire from deep, hitting three triples and scored 12 points.
“Those shots kind of sucked the air out of us,” Varnum coach Jon M. Hadley said. “I told our guys if we wanted to win, we had to start making clutch shots to match them.
“Ultimately, we did.”
Simon’s 3 with a minute left tied the game. Davis had a shot from 15 feet with 4 seconds left in regulation for the win, but it fell short. Roff’s Wil Joplin had an attempt from half court at the buzzer, but it was too hard and a bit right.
Miller scored 18 for Roff (29-2) while Coby Simon added 14.
Madkins finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Fellow Varnum senior Lance Nutt had 11 points and hit a trio of 3s.
Since being upset in the state quarterfinals last season, Varnum had a simple goal this year. Win state.
“It has been tough, it has been a fight,” Davis said. “But we just had to push through.”
And push through Varnum did.
