Tramel: Tanking is tough for Thunder when teams like the Hawks are on the schedule

When NBA teams have built a quality roster and are trying to move up the pecking order with regular-season success to position themselves for the playoffs, sometimes good teams get in the way.

The opposite is true of this Thunder team. Sometimes when NBA teams go into makeover mode, trying to rebuild and position themselves for the draft lottery, bad teams can get in the way.

That is happening to the Thunder on occasion. It happened Friday night, when OKC beat Atlanta 118-109.

The Hawks are trying to win. They fortified their roster with additions like Clint Capela (mid-season a year ago), Danilo Gallinari, Rajon Rondo and Bogdan Bogdanovic.

But the Hawks are helpless and hopeless on defense. They are 24th in defensive efficiency and have found it difficult to consistently win shootouts.

On this fine Saturday morning, the team that is trying like the devil to win has the exact same record as the team that is trying to rebuild. The Thunder and Hawks are each 14-18.

Sure, Atlanta played Friday without Bogdanovic, De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish. That’s three of its top seven players.

But the Thunder played without Al Horford, Hamidou Diallo and George Hill. That’s three of OKC’s top seven or eight players.

And the Thunder, 28th out of 30 teams in offensive efficiency, took Atlanta to the woodshed with a variety of unheralded players.

Darius Bazley, mired in a slump so deep it made you worry about his NBA future, had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Baze made eight of 12 shots.

Ty Jerome, just in from the G League bubble in Orlando, made his Thunder debut with nine points, five rebounds and seven assists. Jerome, then a rookie from Virginia, played in 31 games for the Phoenix Suns a year ago, when he scored more than nine points just thrice and never had more than five rebounds or seven assists.

Thunder rookie Theo Maledon, a second-round draft pick, had 13 points and a career-high 12 assists.

The Thunder didn’t even need another excellent game from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, even though he provided one (24 points; 9-of-16 shooting).

Luguentz Dort outscored Hawks superstar Trae Young, 19-17. Enough said.

“That was the epitome of guys playing with pace, creating advantages for each other,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “I thought tonight the product was incredibly unselfish. Just finding the wide-open shot. I give our guys a lot of credit.”

The Thunder had 31 assists. Maledon and Jerome combined for 19 of them.

It was a strange game. More uniforms (three) than referees (two). The Thunder switched from orange to white uniforms at halftime, after a first half in which Atlanta’s red and OKC’s orange had little contrast.

And Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce knew his team’s defense was not acceptable.

“A lot of technical things, a lot of just effort things that we need to clean up,” Pierce said. “We need to have that sense of urgency. We need to communicate a lot better than we did tonight.”

Teams like the Hawks are getting in the way of the Thunder losing. Hard to collect ping-pong balls for the NBA draft lottery when there’s a steady diet of Clevelands and Atlantas on the schedule.

Sometimes we get the wrong idea about tanking. Tanking is deconstructing the roster. Trading Chris Paul. Trading Dennis Schroder. Allowing Gallinari to walk away in free agency.

But the players and coaches aren’t OK with losing. They’re trying to win, and sometimes culture takes over. This Thunder team plays hard. It’s not great on defense, but it tries. The Thunder is 11th in defensive efficiency. One spot from being in the upper third of the league.

“It’s really fun,” Bazley said. “On the defensive end, try to get stops, rebound, get out and run. Creates a lot of energy.”

And some wins, even in a season when that’s not paramount.
