Oklahoma high school basketball: Roundup of Thursday's tournament action
Multiple basketball tournaments got underway Thursday across the Oklahoma City metro.
Here's a roundup of those games:
PUTNAM NORTH 83, PUTNAM CITY 52
Jeremiah Johnson scored 26 points, and Class 6A second-ranked Putnam North quickly pulled away in a 83-52 win against district foe Putnam City. The Panthers (4-1 overall) led 24-7 after the opening quarter and went on an 11-0 run to begin the second quarter to take a controlling lead. Josh Nwankwo and Mandrell Dean each added 13 points and Phil Jackson tallied 11.
PERKINS-TRYON 60, DUNCAN 53
Gannon McCutchen found his shot in the second half and it was enough to propell Perkins-Tryon over Duncan 60-53 in the Noble Dental Logde Classic. After scoring just five points in the first half, the forward scored 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers and free throws. He finished with 21 points and was backed by Cutter Greene, who put in 16. The pair kept control of the game even after Dunan's late fourth quarter push.
EDMOND NORTH 64, NORTHWEST CLASSEN 62
Marquez Cyrus' 3-pointer fell short just before the final buzzer, and Class 6A No. 3 Edmond North escaped with a 64-62 win against No. 19 Northwest Classen. Northwest Classen trailed most of the game but took the lead late in a back-and-forth final quarter before Edmond North's Dalante Shannon took over. He finished with 19 points.
CHOCTAW 81, MCGUINNESS 71
Senior Sean Franklin tallied 24 points, freshman Ja'Mon Valentine added 23 and Class 6A No. 7 Choctaw topped Class 5A No. 9 McGuinness 81-71 in a fast-paced game. McGuinness senior Graham Tawwater led all scorers with 29 points, but the Fighting Irish fell in an early hole and never were able to catch back up.
MOORE 61, PUTNAM CITY 32
Aaliyah Moore and Raychael Harjo each tallied 17 points, as Class 6A second-ranked Moore dominated Putnam City 61-32 in the Putnam City Invitational. Moore (6-0) held Putnam City to only 12 points in the first half. 10 girls scored for the Lions, which will face Bixby in the second round Friday.
BRIDGE CREEK 42, PERKINS-TRYON 41
Lainey Morrow scored 21 points in Bridge Creek's 42-41 nail-biter win over Perkins-Tryon in the Noble Dental Lodge Classic. The Bobcats went up by as much as 10 points before falling behind late in the third quarter. Bridge Creek fought its way back and reserves Morgan Whitacker and Kate Newhouse stepped up on defense to help hold the Demons to just three points in the fourth quarter. Bridge Creek remains undefeated after the win.
BIXBY 64, PUTNAM NORTH 51
Bixby's defense locked down in the third quarter, as the Class 6A No. 9 Bixby topped No. 7 Putnam North 64-51. Alyssa Nielsen tallied 17 points for Bixby (7-3) and Meredith Mayes added 16. Bixby outscored Putnam North 22-5 in the third quarter, as its defense continued to force turnovers and take advantage on offense. Putnam North's Alyssa Parmer led all scorers with 22 points.
BLANCHARD 79, SOUTHEAST 29
Blanchard's offensive power proved to be too much for Southeast as nearly every Lion scored in the 79-29 win at the Noble Dental Lodge Classic. Blanchard scored at least 21 points in the first three quarters to jump to a big lead before going on cruise control in the fourth. Carly Craig led all scorers with 16 points. Blanchard will take on the winner of Noble and Mount Saint Mary at 7 p.m. on Friday.
