Oklahoma high school girls basketball: Parker Stevenson scores 40 points in Bethel's season opener

SHAWNEE – Parker Stevenson would not be overwhelmed with Harrah’s press defense.

Entering the game as the only returning Bethel starter, Stevenson knew she’d have to serve as the leader of the young Bethel squad.

She did.

Stevenson scored 40 points in Bethel’s season opener on Monday night. The sophomore’s outstanding scoring spurt led Bethel to a 65-54 win over Harrah.

Although Stevenson knocked down three 3-pointers, she scored most of her points in transition after slipping through Harrah’s press and making her way to the rim. She shot 15-17 from the free-throw line.

“Once she gets by the initial two that double-teamed, she’s in the open court,” Bethel coach Tara Satterfield said. “She does a good job with her euro step and making moves and scoring in transition one-on-one.”

Stevenson took advantage of what the defense gave her to find her scoring spark all while helping conduct Bethel’s offense. It was a performance that not only left Satterfield impressed with Stevenson’s scoring but also her leadership.

“We lost six of our top seven [players] last year,” Satterfield said. “So she did a good job leading us on the floor and making sure everybody is in the right spots and keeping her composure. She grew up a lot last night.”
