Scouting West Virginia
Record: 5-3 (4-3 Big 12)
Best player: As good as Mountaineers quarterback Jarret Doege has been, defensive lineman Darius Stills is still West Virginia’s best. Stills’ stats aren’t overwhelming — 19 tackles, 6.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks — but that’s because he’s often the focus of the oppositions’ blocking schemes, regularly drawing double teams and freeing up his teammates to make more disruptive plays.
The case for the Mountaineers: If there’s anyone in the Big 12 that can match OU’s explosiveness on offense and pressure on defense, it’s West Virginia. The Mountaineers are second in the league in total offense, averaging 442 yards per game, and first in total defense, allowing 274 yards per game — more than 50 yards per game fewer than the Sooners’ defense, which is second in the Big 12.
The case for the Sooners: The Sooners are the hottest team in the Big 12 and one of the hottest in the country, riding a five-game winning streak into this game. The Sooners are playing much better on both offense and defense than they were early in the season. OU’s defense has allowed just 492 yards combined in its last two games. The Sooners have not allowed that few yards in back-to-back games since 2016 against Kansas and Iowa State. On offense, the Sooners are averaging 515 yards per game and 45.5 points — both by far best in the Big 12. OU has also yet to lose to West Virginia in Big 12 play, winning all eight meetings since the Mountaineers joined the league.
