Oklahoma Class 2A softball: Latta beat defending champion Silo in extra innings to advance to state final

The game couldn’t have looked more even.

After Latta’s Jade Sanders tied the game with a two-RBI double, Silo and Latta spent six innings stopping each other’s offensive spurts.

It wasn’t until the 10th inning that Hailey Baber made a play to break the scoreless streak.

With two outs, Baber leaned back in her stance and smashed a ball to centerfield. Brylea Russell, who had ripped a double earlier in the inning, sprinted around the bases. Silo’s throw home was too late and Russell stepped across home plate for the game-winning run.

Latta knocked off defending state champion Silo 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday afternoon. The Panthers came back from a four-run first-inning deficit on Field 4 of the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. Baber not only recorded the game-winning RBI double, she also caught the last out.

“Honestly the heart they showed today, I’d take that team any day,” Latta coach Missy Rogers said about her team. “I’m so proud of our girls they stepped up, we got down 4-0 early and we just kept fighting each inning.”

With the win, Latta advanced to the Class 2A state championship. They will take on Dale, who was last year’s runner-up.
