OSU football: The Six Shooter pregame thoughts on the Cowboys at Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kansas — Oklahoma State hits the road for the first time in this weird season, so anything could happen at Kansas in a 2:30 p.m. game on Saturday, televised by ESPN.
So let’s talk about it in this week’s edition of The Six Shooter:
Cowboy in the Crosshairs
Running back Chuba Hubbard
It almost seems too obvious to point at the superstar who has yet to return to his 2019 form, but all eyes are going to be on him in a game where he should be able to dominate. The offensive line seems to have solved its issues after being dealt a pair of significant injuries in the season opener, and Kansas doesn’t pose the same threat in the box that West Virginia did.
Opponent Watch
Kansas quarterback situation
Quarterback Jalon Daniels, a 6-foot, 200-pound dual threat freshman, was one of three quarterbacks to play in the opener. Starter Thomas MacVittie was injured and Miles Kendrick also played. But Daniels went the distance against Baylor last week, throwing the ball 33 times and rushing it 14. But coach Les Miles has said he might need to “rethink” the quarterback situation after the 47-14 loss to Baylor.
Number to Know
4
Pass breakups last week by OSU cornerback Rodarius Williams. The fifth-year senior (and fourth-year starter) is currently graded by Pro Football Focus as the No. 3 cornerback in the country. His receiver has been targeted seven times this season, with one completion for four yards. Kansas has some decent receivers, but the aforementioned quarterback issue complicates things.
Against the Spread
Oklahoma State by 21.5
Seems like a big number, given the offense’s struggles. But the chance that Spencer Sanders returns at quarterback makes it feel like the Cowboys could get going and run away with this thing.
Uni-Guess
Orange-White-Gray
I don’t know if they’ll bring back the oversized chrome Pistol Pete head logo from a couple years back, but that looks really strong on the orange lids. Overall, this color combo is my favorite of their road looks.
1 Wild Prediction
Chuba Hubbard will have 100 yards from scrimmage by halftime
The Kansas defense cures a lot of ills.
(Wild Prediction record: Season, 1-1; All-time, 4-37)
