Oklahoma high school cross country: Edmond Memorial boys hitting their stride

The Edmond Memorial boys cross country team was pleasantly surprised last week.

The Bulldogs didn’t expect to win the Class 6A pre-state meet, but that’s exactly what happened Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe.

“We were stunned,” coach David Sammons said. “We had no idea they had won it. I’ll be honest. In fact, we were leaving and packing up our campsite when we found out, hey, you guys won it.”

With sophomore Josh Cherry and seniors Jack Carter and Carson Kardokus leading the way, Edmond Memorial is one of the top contenders for a state title.

The Bulldogs beat Mustang by eight points last week. Cherry was their top performer, placing sixth as he completed the 5-kilometer run in 16 minutes, 32.71 seconds.

Next up for Edmond Memorial is the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference meet, which is set for Oct. 13 at Deer Creek.
