Scouting Iowa State
Record: 1-1, 1-0 Big 12
Best player: Quarterback Brock Purdy led the charge in Iowa State’s comeback last year in Norman, throwing five touchdowns and running for another before Parnell Motley’s interception on a 2-point conversion attempt helped the Sooners escape with the win. Purdy has been uneven to start this season but went 18 of 23 in Saturday’s win over TCU.
The case for Iowa State: The Cyclones have played the Sooners close in recent years with none of the teams’ last four meetings being decided by more than 10 points. OU’s defense struggled mightily against Skylar Thompson and Kansas State and the Cyclones figure to be the better offense this season.
The case for Oklahoma: History is on the Sooners’ side. OU hasn’t lost in Ames since 1960 and though the games have been close recently, the Sooners have won the last two meetings and 20 of the last 21 against Iowa State. The last time OU lost back-to-back regular-season games, Lincoln Riley was in high school (1999). The Sooners haven’t started 0-2 in Big 12 play since John Blake’s final season at the helm.
