Oklahoma high school football: Norman North routs Mustang in district opener

MUSTANG — Gabe Trevillison took a simple handoff up the middle and had a clear path to the end zone.

The Norman North senior tailback didn’t even have to sprint. His offensive line provided a gaping hole, and Trevillison jogged his way to an 8-yard touchdown before Mustang defenders threatened to make a tackle.

The second-quarter run gave Norman North a two-touchdown lead and demonstrated the Timberwolves’ dominance at the line of scrimmage during Saturday’s game.

Ninth-ranked Norman North made a statement in its District 6A-I-2 opener, defeating No. 6 Mustang 42-14 at Bronco Stadium.

Norman North (2-1) excelled in the ground game, finishing with 40 rushing attempts for 374 yards.

“We always try to establish the running game early,” Trevillison said. “We just had them from the beginning.”

Trevillison led Norman North, running for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. He’s been the focal point of the offense and is having a productive senior season.

Norman North coach Justin Jones is thankful his star running back is healthy. Trevillison battled injuries during Jones' first two years at the school.

“To me, Gabe is a hidden gem mainly because he’s been hurt,” Jones said. “First year, breaks his collarbone. Second year, breaks a collarbone. What people don’t realize is he’s been doing this his entire career, even before he got hurt.”

Norman North’s offensive line had been in quarantine for two weeks before returning to practice Saturday morning. The lack of time on the field prior to Saturday didn’t seem to affect the linemen.

They created big running lanes and had excellent pass protection for senior quarterback Jackson Remualdo, who completed eight of 14 passes for 104 yards and ran for 82 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

The defense was also impressive.

Mustang (2-2) was held scoreless until Jacobe Johnson, one of the nation’s top recruits in the 2023 class, scored on a 50-yard reception from Tristen Russell with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Next up for Norman North is a home game Friday against top-ranked Owasso (4-0, 1-0), the defending champion. Mustang will play at Southmoore (1-3, 1-0) on Thursday.
