OU women's basketball: Sooners offer three Putnam West freshmen
The Oklahoma women’s basketball team offered three Putnam West freshmen.
Taliyah Parker and Shamar Bert announced their offers with a Twitter post on Monday night. Caya Smith’s offer was confirmed by Putnam West athletic director Lenny Bert on Tuesday afternoon.
The three athletes play for Below The Rim, an AAU team that competes nationally. Lenny has helped coach the AAU team since his daughter, Shamar, was in the second grade.
“We’ve won nationals from fourth grade on,” Lenny said. “In our age group, we’ve never lost. We had to start playing two or three years up so we could get competition. So when they were in sixth and seventh grade they were playing in front of Division I schools.”
The trio hasn't just played against higher competition, they’ve excelled at the level. It shows with the college offers they have received as they enter their first year of high school.
Parker, 6'1, holds offers from Mississippi State, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Eastern Michigan.
Smith, 6'0, holds offers from Florida State and Florida, among others.
Oklahoma is the first to offer Shamar Bert, who's listed at 5-foot-7.
“I’m actually enjoying it,” Lenny said about his players receiving college offers at a young age. “You hear your own kid, your daughter, and then the other one’s that you’ve been around since they were adolescents starting to get it. And they haven’t even touched a high school game yet so it’s pretty cool. It’s definitely a blessing.”
