Oklahoma high school volleyball: How Norman North's consistency started win streak

NORMAN – It was a strange start to the season for Norman North's volleyball team.

The Timberwolves didn't scrimmage anyone, instead waiting to play until the regular season started because of the coronavirus pandemic. They started 4-0 and won in straight sets during the first three matches of the Tulsa Union Invitational, then lost both matches on Saturday, struggling to find consistency. Another loss followed the following Friday to open Broken Arrow's tournament.

Since then? Perfection.

Class 6A No. 3 Norman North has won 14 straight matches heading into the Jenks Invitational this weekend, where it will likely have an opportunity to avenge an early loss against the host.

"What's cool about the girls is they all have the same mindset," Norman North coach Stephanie Kane said. "They all want to win. There's not a kid out there who's selfish. They're all very good teammates amongst each other.

The Timberwolves (19-3) have won five straight matches against ranked opponents and are 6-3 against teams ranked in the top five.

Kane said she has plenty of sophomores and juniors who are giving strong contributions throughout her lineup, including sophomore Riley Roberts.

With regionals and the state tournament looming, Norman North has the Jenks Invitational before playing four of its final five matches at home. Four of those five matches are against Class 6A top-10 opponents.
