Oklahoma high school football: Deer Creek rallies from early deficit, tops Edmond North in overtime

EDMOND – Even as its offense struggled, the Deer Creek football team's defense kept it in the game.

During Deer Creek's 24-23 overtime win against Edmond North on Friday, the Antlers trailed multiple times throughout the game and had to rely on its defense to come up with big stops. Then the offense was able to capitalize.

Quarterback Brett Pense found senior Logan Ward for a 6-yard touchdown on fourth-and-5, then Ward hit the tying extra point to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Edmond North scored first but Deer Creek's Reed Eden blocked the extra point. On Deer Creek's offensive possession, Asher Blue scored from a yard out and Ward made the game-winning extra-point attempt.

"We spent last week working to get better all week long defensively," Deer Creek coach Wade Standley said. "Those guys did that, and we've got to do it again this week."

The Antlers (2-1) gave up 560 total yards and 62 points in Week 2 in a loss against Yukon, so the refocused defensive effort paid off.

Now, like Standley said, Deer Creek must continue its growth as it heads to No. 2 Stillwater (2-0) to open district play at 7 p.m. Friday.
