Oklahoma high school football: John Marshall defense stepped up in redemption game

Heritage Hall lined up with a chance to tie the game with a 2-point conversion.

But the John Marshall defense had other plans.

The Bears held the Class 3A No. 1 Chargers out of the endzone to keep the lead.

After giving up a big play in the final minutes to cost John Marshall the victory last week, the Bears defense made a crucial stop when the team needed it most.

The defensive play helped lead John Marshall to a 14-12 win over Heritage Hall at Taft Stadium on Friday night.

“After the heartbreaking loss last week, our defense responded well in that game coming up late especially,” John Marshall coach Jeff Horrocks said. “We had four or five turnovers.”

On a night where the offense did not play to its full potential, the defense forcing turnovers was exactly what Class 4A No. 10 John Marshall needed.

“Honestly, we struggled on offense,’ Horrocks said. “We made plays when we needed to but our defense carried us last night.”

John Marshall (2-1) will take on No. 9 Blanchard next week.
