Oklahoma high school football: Triston Brooke leads Yukon to come-from-behind win with 4 TDs

Triston Brooke squeezed his way through the line of scrimmage.

In the open field, the senior running back stuck his right foot into the ground and made a cut to his left to evade a tackler. As he approached the endzone, he saw another defender charging at him from his right.

In an instant, Brooke stopped in his tracks at the 5-yard line and watched the defender fall over in front of him. Finally, in the clear, Brooke’s tip-toed into the endzone to give Yukon its first lead of the game.

The 29-yard touchdown run was one of many big plays Brooke made in the second half to lead Yukon to a come-from-behind 41-24 win over Norman North at Harve Collins Field on Friday night.

Brook finished with 15 carries for 102 yards and four of Yukon’s six touchdowns. The 6-foot, 202-pound senior was the primary rusher in the RedZone for the Millers as he frequently plowed his way through the Norman North defense.

“It was really fun to see him have such a good night,” Yukon coach Jeremy Reed said about Brooke. “He’s a kid that’s played multiple positions over the last four years and to see him take the lead for us and be a great senior leader was really rewarding.”

The Millers found themselves trailing for most of the game. It began after Yukon gave up an opening drive score and then turned the ball over on the ensuing kickoff. After Norman North’s kicker Carter Blatt knocked through a 34-yard field goal, Yukon was down 10 points with 6:16 left in the first quarter and had yet to run an offensive play.

Reed knew Yukon had dug themselves into a whole but also knew it wouldn’t be an insurmountable task to pull themselves out.

“We just talked and said we have to settle in and play our side of the ball,” Reed said. “And just settle down. The turnover was unfortunate. They just popped it out of Caden’s [Morris] hand on that kickoff return. That obviously was a big moment. [But] it was good to hold them to 10 instead of 14. It was really just, ‘It’s early in the game, got a lot of game left.’”

Yukon went into the half down 17-13 but came out in the second half on a tear. The Millers outscored the Timberwolves 28-7, finishing the game playing their style of football. Of Yukon’s 59 offensive plays, 58 were rushes for 393 yards.

“It was really just more of getting kids settled in and getting their eyes right,” Reed said about how Yukon improved in the second half. “Making sure that they're playing with the right technique that they have to on the particular front or blitz or coverage that’s called.”
