Oklahoma high school football: How Rodney Fields carried Southeast to its first win of the season

Rodney Fields went on a tear in the first quarter.

As a freshman running back, he helped lead Southeast over Classen SAS to a 20-18 win at Speegle Stadium on Thursday night. It was the best running performance by a Spartan Southeast coach Kenneth Blair had seen in years.

“We had a good running game,” Blair said. “We haven’t had that type of running in some years, since I’ve been at Southeast. He really put on a running show in the first quarter. They just couldn’t stop him.”

Fields routinely picked up yardage after effectively running counter plays that stunned the Comet defense. His play helped Southeast get off to an early lead, which the Spartans held on to win.

“He did a good job on reading the defensive ends and the tackles,” Blair said. “I think he saw a lineman block down and he bounced outside and I mean he was off to the races.”

Southeast (1-1) will travel to take on U.S. Grant on Friday.
