Oklahoma high school football: Carson May scores 5 TDs, Jones routs Luther

JONES – Carson May rolled to his left and scanned the field.

The Jones junior quarterback didn’t find an open wide receiver, so he tucked the ball and dashed along the sideline.

May is a big player at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, but he has deceptive speed.

He showed his athleticism in this instance, sprinting for a 21-yard touchdown and ending the play with a dive near the pylon before Luther defenders could push him out of bounds.

The run capped a three-touchdown third quarter for May and was one of his most impressive plays in the Class 2A second-ranked Longhorns’ 40-16 home win Friday.

May finished with 11 carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He was 14-of-24 passing for 320 yards and three scores.

May struggled through the air in the first half, completing just 4 of 12 passes with an interception.

He redeemed himself after the break, starting the third quarter 8 of 8 for 185 yards and two scores.

Senior Trey Dorrell caught both of those touchdowns. The first was 39 yards, and the second was 29.

The Longhorns had a slow start, possibly the result of not being able to get into a rhythm as the coronavirus pandemic continues to cause disruptions. Jones’ scheduled game last week against Tulsa Lincoln Christian was pushed to next Friday.

But once the Longhorns settled in, they dominated Luther (0-2).

“You have some starts and stops in the season, and you’re going to deal with those things this year,” Jones coach Dave Martin said. “That’s where you got to fight for some consistency.”

Jones’ defense was solid throughout Friday’s game.

The Longhorns (2-0) held Luther to 179 yards.

Luther senior Drew Scheer threw two touchdowns when the game was out of reach.

“On the defensive side, we felt like we had several different kids continue to make plays and step up,” Martin said.

On Friday, Jones will play at Class 3A defending champion Tulsa Lincoln Christian (1-0), which is ranked No. 5. Luther will play at Owasso Rejoice Christian (0-1).
