Oklahoma high school football: Stillwater's Qwontrel Walker surpasses 6,000 career rushing yards

MUSTANG – Qwontrel Walker is running himself deeper in the state's high school football record books.

On Class 6A-II No. 2 Stillwater's first play from scrimmage in its 62-21 win against Class 6A No. 5 Mustang on Friday, Walker broke a run 80 yards up the middle for a touchdown. The carry put him past 6,000 career rushing yards, becoming the 19th player in state history to accomplish the feat.

He finished with 260 rushing yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns. Walker now has 6,209 career rushing yards, which is 14th-most in state history.

"If you think about it, there's a lot of games where he hasn't played past the first half," Stillwater coach Tucker Barnard said. "If he would've played in every game, who knows where he would be.

"Hats off to him. He's a humble star, takes care of his business and he has earned every bit of it."

If Walker were to reach 7,000 career yards, he would become No. 8 on the state's all-time career rushing yardage list. Hulbert's Jacob Bruce, who graduated in 2018, owns the record at 8,586 yards to go along with 116 touchdowns.

Stillwater (2-0) is set to host No. 1 Bixby (2-0) in a rematch of the past two Class 6A-II state title games at 7 p.m. Friday.
