Oklahoma high school football: New starting quarterback Carson Laverty leads Putnam North past Putnam City

Carson Laverty was efficient in his debut as Putnam North’s starting quarterback.

The sophomore completed 14 of 19 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Panthers earn a 31-6 season-opening win Friday against school district rival Putnam City.

Other than an interception in the second quarter, Laverty – the son of Putnam North coach Ryan Laverty – had a clean game for the Class 6A-II No. 8-ranked Panthers.

“He managed the game like we had wanted him to manage it,” Ryan Laverty said. “He got hit, he got banged around, he got sacked but didn’t turn the ball over on those plays. Just really did what we asked him to do – get the ball to our playmakers and put them in position to make big plays and score touchdowns for us.”

Seniors Kayhon Russell and Tyce Mythen each had five catches and one touchdown against Putnam City, which is No. 15 in Class 6A-I. Russell finished with 67 yards, and Mythen had 62.

Junior Amaurion Norment had 11 carries for 82 yards. He is the younger brother of former Putnam North star quarterback and defensive back Aaron Norment, who is now playing at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

Putnam North will host Class 5A No. 4 Piedmont (1-0) on Friday.
