Coronavirus in Oklahoma: Plaza Walls Mural Expo spreads out in response to pandemic
The fifth annual Plaza Walls Mural Expo is spreading out in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
The popular mural painting showcase typically takes place in the fall in conjunction with the Plaza District Festival. As previously reported, the district canceled this year's Plaza District Festival due to the pandemic.
Instead of centering on one day, the Plaza Walls Mural Expo this year is featuring artists painting new murals throughout the Plaza District during the months of September and October.
More than 20 artists are booked for the two-month expo, and a gallery exhibition featuring the muralists slated is planned for Oct. 9 at the Plaza Walls Gallery, 1745 NW 16 Street, Suite F4.
Jason Pawley started off the new mural painting Thursday, according to the schedule, and Denise Duong is set to start painting today.
Other artists booked for the expo include Yatika Fields, Dusty Gilpin, Skip Hill, Ackzilla, Cassie Stover, Virginia Sitzes, Up Doggs, Mariell Guzman, Dawn Jaiye, Holey Kids, Marpohl, Tiffany McKnight, Print Party, John Salame, SBZ, Joe Skilz, Sullystring, Sean Vali, Wiley and Tony Thunder.
Each artist is expected to work for two to four days on their murals, and people are welcome to come by and watch them work. They are urged to maintain social distancing.
As previously reported, the Plaza District will close 16 Street from N Indiana Ave. to N Gatewood Ave. each Saturday starting tonight through October for their weekly 16th Street Saturdays event.
The street closure is an effort to give space to visitors to socially distance during their time in the popular Plaza District. With the extra space, the Plaza District will host artist vendors and live music, continuing its mission to provide opportunities for the public to interact with the arts and artists, according to a news release.
This weekend will include live music, an artist market and several specials from Plaza businesses, along with the Plaza Walls’ Mural Expo.
The Plaza Mural Expo is an outgrowth of Plaza Walls, a curated, rotating mural project in the Plaza District that is managed and produced by the nonprofit Oklahoma Mural Syndicate, an organization dedicated to curating and promoting public street art in Oklahoma. Since it was launched by well-known artists Dylan Bradway and Kristopher Kanaly, with approval by the Oklahoma City Arts Commission and Urban Design Commission, the Plaza Walls project has evolved into a striking outdoor mural gallery that draws visitors from across the city, state, region, country and even the world.
