5 interesting last meals Oklahoma death row inmates chose
Imagine you’re just hours away from being executed by the state of Oklahoma: What would your last meal be?
While doing some research on Oklahoma's death penalty and convicts on death row, I stumbled across some information about the food choices former inmates selected for their final meals.
Not to sound tactless, but it’s kind of an interesting thing to think about: What food do you love so much that you’d choose to be part of your final meal? Mine would have to include fresh shrimp spring rolls and a medium-rare ribeye steak.
And some gummy bears.
And a Double Crunchy roll from Tokyo here in Oklahoma City.
And a Mexican Coca-Cola (the glass bottle kind).
Of course, there are limits to what inmates can request for their final meals, which help prevent the wasting of food. If it’s $15 or less, then the state will probably grant the request.
Here are five of the most interesting last suppers I came across. Some are interesting due to the quantity of food requested and some are interesting because of the combination of food requested.
What do you think of the inmates’ choices?
Michael Lannier Pennington murdered Bradley Thomas Grooms in 1991, shooting him with a shotgun during a robbery attempt.
Pennington was executed in 2005 and his final meal included: a small vegetarian pizza, a large garden salad with Italian dressing, a hot fudge sundae, a bag of Oreo cookies and a pint of milk (about 4,000 calories).
Robert Leroy Bryan shot and killed his aunt, Mildred Inabell Bryan, in 1993.
He was executed in 2004 and his final meal included: 10 pieces of fried chicken, beans, cole slaw, potatoes and gravy, two biscuits and two liters of Dr. Pepper (about 5,700 calories).
Kenneth Eugene Turrentine suspected his girlfriend, Anita Louise Richardson, of having affairs with other men, and that she and his sister, Avon Stephenson, were cheating him out of money. In 1994, he confronted his sister, shot and killed her, then confronted his girlfriend, and shot and killed her and her two children.
He was executed in 2005 and his final meal included: 10 slices of cheesecake, 10 pieces of fried chicken and 10 pieces of fried catfish (about 8,200 calories).
Harold Loyd McElmurry III, with the help of his wife, murdered Robert and Rose Pendleton in 1999. Robert was stabbed and beaten to death while Vickie lured Rose away. Harold then killed Rose while Vickie held her.
He was executed in 2003 and his final meal included: A Canadian bacon pizza, a pint of chicken livers, cottage cheese and one raw white onion (about 4,400 calories).
By the way, a pint of chicken livers.
Tyrone Peter Darks shot and killed Sherry Goodlow in 1994. They had a rocky relationship and, after killing her, he kidnapped their then-2-year-old son. At first Darks denied any involvement but he, apparently, had loose lips in jail and told some of his cellmates that he did the deed. He eventually told police that Goodlow “got what she deserved.”
He was executed in 2004 and his final meal included: Six extra crispy chicken breasts with hot sauce, six rolls, a bag of jelly beans, a bag of red licorice, six glazed lemon donuts and six cream sodas (about 8,200 calories).
