Oklahoma high school football: Young Midwest City team has grown into an experienced group

MIDWEST CITY -- From the sidelines of the Midwest City practice field, coach Darrell Hall scanned his players looking for an underclassman participating in the varsity intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday.

What he found was simple.

The young Bomber team from last year, who advanced to the 2019 Class 6A-II state playoffs, has now grown into an experienced group looking to improve on what it built last season.

“Only sophomore I see right now that’s in the mix is my starting quarterback,” Hall said. “But after that, it’s mostly juniors and seniors that I’m vying for.”

Quarterback DeAngelo Irvin Jr. was the lone sophomore. Although he is an underclassman, he has garnered experience of his own as he started all 11 games last year for Midwest City.

With his experience and everyone Midwest City is bringing back this year, including Oklahoma State commit Makale Smith, who was No. 15 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 list, Hall expects to have a successful season.

“They know what’s at stake,” Hall said. “They know what I expect because I’m not sugar-coating it. When this thing is said and done and we have our season and take care of business, I expect to be one of those last teams playing.”
