EDMOND — Oklahoma Christian Academy has a different feeling within its football program this summer.

Although OCA has won just five games in the past two seasons, a few additions to its coaching staff have helped the Eagles believe they can reverse the trend.

Over roughly the past month, OCA hired former OU players Mossis Madu and Jimmy Wilkerson and former UCO standout Nick George.

For head coach Grey Powell, the impact of the recent hires is already starting to show.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “The way they are, the kind of men they are, the way they connect with our kids. We’ve had one of the best summers.”

Powell has a history of hiring former standout college players, especially athletes from OU.

Former offensive lineman Bronson Irwin, who played for the Sooners from 2010-13, coached at OCA for three years, opening the door for Powell to establish connections with other ex-OU players.

Last season, former Sooner wide receiver Jarrail Jackson coached at OCA. He stayed until Bob Stoops, his former head coach at OU, gave him a job in the XFL’s Dallas franchise.

Despite Jackson departing, he played a role in luring Madu to OCA.

Madu’s daughters also attend OCA, providing another reason for why he wanted to join the staff. The former Norman running back, who played in the NFL for three years and the Canadian Football League from 2014-19, is coaching running backs and linebackers. He is also the head strength and conditioning coach.

Madu’s hiring ultimately led to Wilkerson joining the staff.

“His daughter played on a soccer team with Jimmy Wilkerson’s daughter,” Powell said. “We were looking for a defensive line coach. Jimmy had been over at (Oklahoma Christian School) but wasn’t there anymore.”

Wilkerson, a star defensive lineman at OU in the early 2000s who played in the NFL for nine years, was thrilled for the opportunity to join OCA and was hired.

George, who played at UCO from 2016-19, was added to coach the offensive line.

Powell knew the All-MAIA offensive lineman through his dad, Tom George, who runs QB Impact Academy.

Powell said he is grateful for the additions and believes they are helping transform the program.

“The kids have really bought it in,” Powell said. “Of course, how could you not when you have that kind of talent and experience around you? I’ve been coaching for 22 years, and I’ve won two state championships in two different states, but I haven’t played in the NFL for nine years and all that kind of stuff.”
