OKC Thunder: Andre Roberson to start final scrimmage
Andre Roberson will start the Thunder's third and final scrimmage Tuesday night against the Trail Blazers, coach Billy Donovan said before tip-off.
Roberson, after missing the last 30 months with knee injuries, has only played second-half minutes in the Thunder's first two scrimmages before the season restart.
"I think it's at a point now for him where what's made him a unique player has been his versatility to be able to guard a lot of different positions and a lot of really high-level offensive players," Donovan said. "I think with (Damian) Lillard and (CJ) McCollum and Carmelo (Anthony), you've got some really, really high-quality offensive players and productive players. I think Andre playing against different combinations of those guys, we'll just really see where he's at."
While it's an encouraging sign of Roberson's progress, the Thunder wing won't get the chance to prove himself against Lillard and McCollum. Both of Portland's star guards will sit in the final tune-up game, Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts told reporters before tip-off.
Roberson will start alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, Danilo Gallinari and Steven Adams. Chris Paul will rest Tuesday night, which left an opening for Roberson.
Thunder wing Abdel Nader will play after passing concussion protocol. Guard Terrance Ferguson and center Nerlens Noel will not play.
Ferguson recently suffered a leg contusion.
"We don't think it's anything significant but certainly wanted to give him ample time to rest," Donovan said.
Noel has to sit after failing to take his daily COVID-19 test. Players who forget to take their test must quarantine for one day before rejoining their team.
