High school golf: Former OU coach Gregg Grost takes over Norman boys program

Gregg Grost has been hired as the Norman boys golf coach, Norman Public Schools announced Friday.

Grost was the OU men’s coach from 1986-2000. He helped the program win three conference titles and its first national championship in 1989.

Grost, the chief executive officer for the Golf Coaches Association of America, was also the head coach at Lamar from 1981-85.

“Coach Grost has played a key role in the development of several student-athletes at the collegiate level,” Norman Public Schools athletic director T.D. O’Hara said in a release. “In doing so, he has demonstrated a strong ability to develop relationships with his athletes which is extremely important when trying to get student-athletes to maximize their abilities.”

Grost replaces Bruce Renfroe, who recently left Norman to lead the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma women's golf program.

“The chance to give back to the sport of golf and specifically junior golfers here in Norman is something I take very seriously,” Grost said in a release. “Success in the classroom, on the course and in the community will be the foundation of our program as they were when I coached for The University of Oklahoma.”

Renfroe coached both the boys and girls programs at Norman. A girls coach has not been hired.
