OSU football: Kolby Harvell-Peel named to Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list

Oklahoma State officials began a push for Kolby Harvell-Peel to be named the best defensive back in the country months ago.

Monday, the first step was completed.

Cowboys star safety Kolby Harvell-Peel was named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list.

Harvell-Peel had a breakout 2019 season, earning First Team All-Big 12 from both the conference coaches and media. He was also voted as the team’s defensive MVP. He finished with 71 tackles, five interceptions, 13 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles, a sack and three tackles for a loss.

The watch list includes 49 players from 10 conferences, including four from the Big 12. The SEC led the way with seven players on the list.

The list is compiled by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and is based on previous performance and preseason All-America lists. A screening committee of OSHOF members monitor the list and narrow it down throughout the season.
