The Oklahoman’s Super 30: Del City’s Rejhan Tatum is a prized recruit thanks in part to 'freakish strength'

DEL CITY — Rejhan Tatum has several qualities that make him a star linebacker.

Speed. Anticipation. Vision.

But one trait really sticks out when Tatum competes on the field.

“He’s got freakish strength,” said Mike Dunn, his coach at Del City.

Tatum utilizes every bit of his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame to shed blocks and take down ball carriers.

A competitive powerlifter, he dedicates a lot of his time to increasing his strength and size. Tatum’s hard work shows when he takes the field on Friday nights, and colleges around the country have taken notice.

Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas and Boise State are among the schools that have offered Tatum a scholarship.

He is No. 13 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 rankings of the state’s top 2021 recruits.

Tatum isn’t the only member of his family who has made the Super 30 list.

His brother, Ron Tatum III, was No. 3 among 2018 recruits. The defensive lineman began his college career at OU before transferring to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. He announced his commitment to the University of Texas at San Antonio on May 28, the same day UTSA offered Rejhan a scholarship.

Rejhan has looked up to Ron throughout his life. Ron’s success has often motivated his younger brother.

“I was trying to be better than him,” Rejhan said. “I feel like I’m better than him now.”

Rejhan Tatum began his high school career at Putnam City but was frustrated after the team finished 0-10 during his sophomore season.

Tatum knew some Del City players and liked the program, so he decided to transfer.

“I really just came over to start winning,” he said.

Tatum is glad he made the switch.

He led Del City with 151 tackles last season as the team finished 9-3 and advanced to the Class 6A-II state semifinals.

“He had a big stamp on what we did,” Dunn said. “He brings that toughness.”

Tatum has been one of the main leaders in the program since he arrived.

His feats in the weight room still astonish players and coaches.

“That’s what separates him from a lot of guys,” Dunn said. “Makes him unique. He’s a guy that can get under the bench press and put up 395 pounds and squat 550.”
