OSU athletics: Mike Holder says budget cuts are coming

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder said Friday that budget cuts are coming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but nothing is official.

“Those budget adjustments and salary cuts are in our future,” Holder said in a Zoom teleconference. “I can't tell you what they're going to look like right now. We have no clue what's going to happen with our ability to play sports of any kind this coming year.”

Earlier this week, the University of Oklahoma athletics department announced budget cuts of approximately $13.7 million as cost-cutting measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Sooners’ cuts also included a 10 percent salary reduction for staff making $1 million or more per year, including athletic director Joe Castiglione, football coach Lincoln Riley, men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger and women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale.

OU also said no financial aid or services to student-athletes would be affected.

That’s a promise Holder made Friday as well.

“I’ll assure you this: No matter what happens in the next eight, 10, 12 months, no matter what revenue looks like for our athletic department, we will honor every single scholarship,” Holder said. “We will honor every scholarship from those seniors that had their spring seasons interrupted that want to come back.

“We understand our priorities here, which is educating young people. Whatever scholarships we have promised for the 2020-21 season, we expect to do exactly the same thing again.”

Holder also said moving the football season to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic could be feasible.

“It might not be preferred, but anything’s possible,” Holder said. “They just want to play — doesn't matter if it’s a soccer player or football player or baseball player. They came here to compete, and we want to give ‘em a chance to win the conference championship, national championship or whatever it may be. Hopefully, they’re dreaming that big.”
