OKC doctor accused of illegally prescribing opioids

A federal grand jury is blaming an Oklahoma City pain doctor for illegally prescribing opioids and and other controlled substances and causing the deaths of three patients.

Dr. Donald Hyungjoon Kim, 53, is accused in an indictment of distributing drugs that include oxycodone, oxycotin and fentanyl "outside the usual course of professional medical practice and without legitimate medical purpose," according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Downing in Oklahoma City.

The grand jury returned the indictment Thursday charging Kim with 154 separate counts of distributing controlled substances between July 1, 2015, to October 12, 2018. The Oklahoma City DEA office began investigating Kim's prescription practices in 2018.

The indictment also alleges that Kim's criminal distribution of the drugs resulted in three patient deaths.

The doctor faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of illegally distributing controlled substances and up to life in prison if convicted of any of the counts alleged to have caused death, authorities said.
