High school baseball: Binger-Oney hires Travis Owen as head baseball coach

An Oklahoma Hall of Fame baseball coach found a new home.

Binger-Oney hired Travis Owen as its new head baseball coach, Owen told The Oklahoman on Monday.

Owen, who has coached at Yukon, Tuttle, McLoud and U.S. Grant, was inducted into the 2019 Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in December after a career that spans over 20 years.

“I thought I was done to be quite honest,” Owen said. “But it’s a good deal, good people down there and hopefully I go down there and make a little bit of a difference.”

Owen said he didn’t think he was going to take the position because it was a situation he had never coached in before, noting Binger-Oney is a Class A team and they play in the fall and spring. But he changed his mind upon visiting the school and viewing the baseball field.

“They got a baseball field that’s named after Johnny Bench and it’s a nice little park,” Owen said. “It’s all bricked up and they took me down there, it’s a beautiful facility."

Owen spent this spring as an assistant coach at Yukon.

“Yukon was good for me,” Owen said. [But] when you’re a head coach so long, it’s hard to go back and be an assistant. So I just thought I’m going to do this. I’ve always enjoyed the smaller schools so I guess that’s just where I belong.”

Owen's latest head coaching job was at Tuttle where he led them to the 2014 Class 4A state championship. His final season at Tuttle the Tigers finished 29-9 but did not make the state tournament.
