OU football: CeeDee Lamb to become 9th starter drafted off 2017 offense
CeeDee Lamb is expected to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. When that happens, it will complete the college legacy of OU’s 2017 offense. And what an offense it was.
Lamb will become the ninth starter off that offense to be drafted by the NFL, and that doesn’t include guard Cody Ford, who made four starts that season, became a standout player in 2018 and was picked in the second round of the ’19 draft, by the Buffalo Bills.
“It was obviously a really good group,” Lincoln Riley said Wednesday on a teleconference. “Kind of a combination of guys from everywhere. That first group that we had two years to develop. It’s a great group for us.”
Riley arrived as Bob Stoops’ offensive coordinator in 2015, and by 2017 the Sooners were as high-powered as any offense in OU history. Here is the draft status of the starters.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield: first overall pick, Cleveland Browns, 2018
Tailback Rodney Anderson: sixth round, Cincinnati Bengals, 2019
Wide receiver Marquise Brown: first round, Baltimore Ravens, 2019
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb: to be determined
Tight end Mark Andrews: third round, Baltimore Ravens, 2018
Offensive tackle Orlando Brown: third round, Baltimore Ravens, 2018
Offensive tackle Bobby Evans: third round, Los Angeles Rams, 2019
Guard Ben Powers: fourth round, Baltimore Ravens, 2019
Guard Dru Samia: fourth round, Minnesota Vikings, 2019
The only starters who didn’t get drafted were center Erick Wren and wide receiver Jeff Badet (or any receiver you want to plug in as the No. 3 wideout).
It was an incredible collection of talent for a team that lost 54-48 in double overtime to Georgia, in the national semifinal Rose Bowl.
“Skill sets aren’t always going to be the same, but you had impact players at each position and on top of that high-character guys who played well together,” Riley said. “Because of that you had a historically good offense. Great group for us for any side of the ball, but certainly we’re just trying like heck to get back there again.”
