OU women's basketball: Deer Creek's Skylar Vann flips commitment to Sooners
Skylar Vann has flipped her college commitment and decided to stay home.
The Deer Creek High School senior switched her commitment from Temple to OU, she told The Oklahoman on Friday.
“I wanted to stay home in the first place,” Vann said. “But I wasn’t really given the opportunity until last minute.”
With the rise of the coronavirus pandemic, Vann decided she would rather stay closer to her family, noting the distance between her home and Temple played a major role in her decision.
“Twenty hours? I feel like that’s a big gap,” Vann said of the drive time between Deer Creek and Philadelphia, where Temple is located. “And just to get that opportunity (to play at OU) and that’s my dream school, I just can’t pass that up.”
Vann led Deer Creek to a 22-4 record and the No. 2 seed of the Class 6A state tournament, which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year averaged 18.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.7 blocks this season.
Vann is the second prospect from the state to commit to the Sooners this month as 2021 Norman guard Kelbie Washington announced her decision April 9.
