NFL Draft: Mel Kiper Jr. talks draft chances for Sooner defenders
After no OU defenders were taken in last year’s NFL Draft, how the Sooners’ defensive players fare this time around will be very important.
ESPN NFL analyst Mel Kiper Jr. shared his thoughts on the defensive draft prospects coming out of OU on a conference call Wednesday.
Linebacker Kenneth Murray has been a highly touted prospect all along.
“He’s got three straight years of great production,” Kiper said. “His tackle numbers are staggering. His tackles for loss, his sacks. He’s all over the field. He’s got a chiseled frame. He’s a great kid.”
Kiper has Murray going to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 20 pick but said he could see Murray going to the Miami Dolphins at No. 18 or the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 19. Kiper doesn’t see Murray falling any lower than the New Orleans Saints at No. 24.
But Murray isn’t the only Sooner defender getting drafted this year, according to Kiper. Defensive lineman Neville Gallimore is also a strong prospect. Kiper sees the Ottawa, Ontario, native getting taken in the third round.
“He can wear a lot of hats for you, Gallimore can, because he’s got a lot of talent,” Kiper said. “He’s powerful. He tested extremely well. This kid is an athlete. He can run like no other.
“I think if you get him in the third round with his versatility and the way he can get into that back field — I would say Gallimore would be a really good third round pick for somebody.”
Finally, corner Parnell Motley could get picked up in the late rounds of the draft.
“I think he’s a guy — special teams early, see what you can get out of him later on in a year or two in that secondary,” Kiper said. “But he’s a late round possibility.”
