Sisters Monique Short, 41, and Erica Emery, 33, co-managing partners in Monarch Property Group LLC, brought experience in corporate outside sales and small-business growth and management to their construction and property management company,

Short excelled at providing supplies and resources to people so their companies could succeed. Emery focused on her and her husband’s business, Artisan Window and Power Washing, growing it from a small operation in Oklahoma City to 24 employees working across the state. They started slowly, buying houses, remodeling them and selling them.

Monarch Property Group is recognized for design and craftsmanship, and has become a recognized name in the homebuilder community. Monarch’s diverse portfolio consists of extensive home renovations, custom designed homes for expanding families, "and homes with amazing downtown views."

Highlights: Custom homes from the suburbs to the inner-city, including Urban Edge @ JFK, a seven-unit residential project set to be finished this summer in the John F. Kennedy neighborhood.

"Urban Edge was imagined as a way to bring a modern product to the neighborhood, without disrupting the feel of the neighborhood. We also liked the idea of creating single-family attached housing, as a way to maximize the use of the consecutive corner lots," they explain on their website. "We designed two floor plans, for the flexibility of buyers. We wanted these homes to fit a variety of lifestyles. A shared drive allows access to rear-entry garages."

Short said their work is about more than physical property. She also serves on the board of City Care OKC and The Awesome Foundation. Emery is on the board of Northeast OKC Renaissance Inc. Both volunteer with Urban Land Institure, Congress for the New Urbanism Oklahoma City, and NEOKC Developer's Conference.

"We try to have a positive impact on any community that we work in," she said. "We are passionate about improving access to education, access to housing, and creating opportunities for employment and job training."

Their business practices are outlined on their website.

"Community First: We honor and respect the communities in which we build. We honor the history, respect the present and help cast vision for the future. Our team gets to know existing neighbors, attends community meetings, freely shares knowledge and truly wants to see neighborhoods thrive.

"Kindness Always: We realize that life is short and so we choose kindness every day. Caring for our contractors and the people we build houses for has been a staple since day one. We’ve also had the pleasure of building houses for really great people. We’d like to keep that streak alive.

"Excellence In All We Do: Excellence can be found in the details. We can dream big with clients and dive into the details with our team to ensure that every project is getting done with excellence. We let our work speak for itself."

Life philosophy: "Get up every day and make it happen!" Short said.

Advice to the next generation of leaders: Short, speaking for both, said: "Do not sell yourself short or take your talents for granted. Do not discount your abilities or what you have to offer. Do not let other people reduce or minimize your abilities, and finally, charge what you are worth!

"Encourage and mentor the women around you and that are growing up behind you. Always find a way to give back, even if it is unique to you. Take a chance or even chances on yourself; never give up experimenting and finding what makes you great."
