Coronavirus in Oklahoma: Thunder COVID-19 tests come back negative

Thunder players and staff members have tested negative for COVID-19, the team announced Wednesday.

The Thunder said it followed infectious disease experts' recommendation on which players and staff members should be tested for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The team did not release the exact number of tests performed, but all players and a handful of staff members were tested, a Thunder spokesperson said. All tests came back negative.

The infectious disease experts' recommendation was based on possible exposure to the virus on March 11, when OKC's game against Utah was postponed just before tip-off in response to Jazz center Rudy Gobert testing positive for COVID-19.

Jazz players and staff members were tested at Chesapeake Energy Arena that night, and guard Donovan Mitchell also tested positive for COVID-19. The Thunder was not tested that evening, as first reported by ESPN.

"Recognizing the stress on the state of Oklahoma’s medical system," the Thunder said in Wednesday's release, "the Thunder did not use state resources and chose an alternative path for testing of its personnel."

The team followed the Oklahoma State Department of Health's protocols on appropriate timing for testing, a Thunder spokesperson said

In the span of a week, known COVID-19 cases in the NBA have risen from one to seven. On Tuesday, the Nets announced that four players had tested positive, the most on a single team so far.
