Berry Tramel: Baylor basketball deserves respect

Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson brought his Razorbacks to the Myriad for a 1994 NCAA Tournament first-round game and complained about a lack of respect for his team. At the time, Arkansas was ranked No. 1 and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAAs.

So probably best to be careful about playing the lack-of-respect card for a team that is No. 1 in the nation. But I’m going to play it anyway.

I’m not sure we’re giving the Baylor Bears enough respect. The Bears are 24-1, ranked No. 1 and have a Big 12-record 23-game winning streak.

No, they are not the 1997 Jayhawks or the 1988 Sooners. They do not have star power like T.J. Ford or Kevin Durant or Michael Beasley or Kevin Durant or Buddy Hield.

Heck, Baylor doesn’t have a player as good as Devon Dotson, or previous Jayhawk point guards Frank Mason III and Devonte’ Graham.

College basketball is watered-down. We all agree on that. But we’re not comparing Baylor 2020 to Jack Hartman’s Wildcats or Norm Stewart’s Tigers or Larry Brown’s Jayhawks. We’re comparing Baylor to the rest of college basketball 2020, and in that comparison, the Bears are awesome.

They have beaten Villanova, Arizona, Butler and Florida. They have beaten Texas Tech in Lubbock, Kansas in Lawrence and OU in Norman.

The Bears are 24-1 and broke the Big 12 (not Big Eight) record for longest winning streak, surpassing the 22-game streak of the great Kansas team of 1996-97, which included Paul Pierce, Jacque Vaughn, Raef LaFrentz, Scot Pollard and Jerod Haase. That’s the best Middle America team I’ve seen in 50 years of paying attention.

And Baylor has broken that streak.

“Nobody can be on for 23 straight nights,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew, after his team beat the Sooners 65-54 Tuesday night. “It takes a team. I would have never thought about a streak like this. Top to bottom, there’s no easy game. When you’ve been in the league for 17 years, you can appreciate the history as well. Being in the record books is special.”

The Bears are led by guards Jared Butler (15.6 points per game) and MaCio Teague (14.4). Teague didn’t even play Tuesday night vs. OU.

The rest of the Bears average single-digit scoring – guard Davion Mitchell 9.8, center Freddie Gillespie 9.6, guard Devonte Bandoo 7.8, forward Mark Vital 6.3.

I don’t know if any of the Bears will play in the NBA. Butler might. But the Bears are a cohesive, tough, talented team.

The Bears play great team defense – they are allowing a Big 12-best 56.2 points a game in conference.

By any measurement, this Baylor is great in the context of this season.

In the 24 years of Big 12 basketball, only one team went undefeated in conference play. The 2001-02 Jayhawks went 16-0 – that Kansas included Nick Collison, Drew Gooden, Kirk Hinrich, Aaron Miles and Keith Langford. A great, great team. Those Jayhawks made the Final Four before losing to eventual NCAA champion Maryland, and one of the other Big 12 teams, OU, also made the Final Four.

Kansas’ 1996-97 and 1997-98 teams went 15-1. I told you about that ’97 team, which went 34-2 and was upset by Arizona in the Sweet 16. The next year, with Pierce and LaFrentz pulling most of the freight, KU went 34-5 and suffered a second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Rhode Island in Oklahoma City.

The only Big 12 team with one or fewer conference defeats was the 2009-10 Jayhawks, who went 15-1. That KU team was 33-3 overall and suffered a second-round NCAA loss to Northern Iowa, against in OKC. That Jayhawk team was led by Sherron Collins, Xavier Henry, Marcus Morris and Cole Aldrich.

As you can see, most great college basketball teams of the past included NBA-level talent. This Baylor team apparently doesn’t.

But the Bears are showing no signs of losing. They are No. 1 in the nation for a good reason. They’ve earned that status.
