Oklahoma scene: Sooners blast Northern Iowa to finish Hillenbrand Invitational
No. 2 Oklahoma (8-1) closed its weekend at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona on Sunday by defeating Northern Iowa, 8-0, in five innings.
Kinzie Hansen homered and delivered a 2-RBI double for the Sooners. Jocelyn Alo also homered while Grace Lyons had a 2-RBI double and Grace Green doubled in a run.
Senior pitcher Shannon Saile (2-1) fanned five and allowed just three hits in four innings to get the win.
OU went 4-1 during the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Sooners travel to Palm Springs, California next weekend to play five games in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, including a matchup against No. 1 Washington.
Team USA shuts out OSU Cowgirls
Team USA defeated No. 16 Oklahoma State, 4-0, on Sunday in a exhibition softball game at the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.
Softball legend Monica Abbott cruised through seven no-hit innings for Team USA. Her only blemish in the game was a walk to OSU shortstop Kiley Naomi to start the game.
OSU finished 4-1 in the tournament and will compete next weekend in the Blazer Classic in Birmingham, Alabama.
Grand Canyon downs Cowboys to win series
Grand Canyon defeated No. 16 Oklahoma State, 9-3, on Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona to take two of three in the season-opening baseball series for the Cowboys.
Caeden Trenkle was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for OSU. Max Hewitt went 3-for-3 while Cade Cabbiness had two hits and drove in a run.
Justin Campbell took the loss on the mound as the freshman right-hander allowed five runs on four hits in three innings of work.
OSU concludes its trip to Phoenix with a showdown at No. 3 Arizona State on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
OU men's golf leads Puerto Rico Classic
The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team is the leader after Sunday's opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic, taking place at the par-72, 6,902-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
All five Sooners shot under par to put OU in the lead with a first-round score of 281 (-7). Oklahoma is one stroke ahead of No. 3 Georgia Tech and five shots ahead of third-place No. 20 Georgia and Alabama.
OU freshman Jake Holbrook is tied for third after posting a 69 (-3) in the first round. Play resumes Monday in the 54-hole tournament.
Two bouts announced for UFC Fight Night in OKC
UFC has announced two bouts that will be held during its May 2 Fight Night in Oklahoma City at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
In the women's strawweight bout, Claudia "Claudinha" Gadelha will face Marina Rodriguez. In the women's bantamweight bout, it will be Sarah Alpar vs Vanessa Melo.
The main event has yet to be announced.
