OSU softball: Cowgirls upset No. 9 Alabama 4-1 in St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational

Cowgirls upset No. 9 Alabama

Oklahoma State's Carrie Eberle pitched a three-hitter and Sydney Pennington homered as the No. 16 Cowgirls knocked off No. 9 Alabama, 4-1, Saturday in the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.

Eberle fanned three in tossing a complete game as the Cowgirls turned a crucial double play in the sixth with the bases loaded.

OSU junior Michaela Richbourg drove in the game’s first run in the third on an infield single. The Cowgirls tacked on another in the fourth when senior Alysen Febrey delivered a run-scoring groundout.

Alabama trimmed the lead to one in the sixth but the Cowgirls added two insurance runs in seventh on a solo home run by Pennington and a wild pitch that plated freshman Maci Cunconan.

The No. 16 Cowgirls (6-3) wrap up play in Florida on Sunday with an exhibition game against Team USA. The game will be televised on ESPN3 at 9 a.m.

OU splits games in Arizona

After its first loss of the season earlier Saturday, No. 2 OU bounced back to defeat No. 4 Arizona 6-4 in 10 innings in the Hillenbrand Invitational in Phoenix Arizona.

Long Beach scored four runs in the seventh to defeat OU 5-4 in the Sooners' first game on Saturday.

Against Arizona, the Sooners (5-1) trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh inning but tied the game on a fielder's choice by Taylon Snow after a double by Raylee Pogue.

OU freshman pitcher Olivia Rains got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, getting a double play when first baseman Kinzie Hansen snagged a liner and touched the bag to end the inning.

In the 10th, Arizona outfielder Isabella Dayton dropped a fly ball hit by Grace Green, allowing the winning runs to score. The Sooners will finish the Hillenbrand Invitational against Northern Iowa at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
