Women's softball: Alo homers twice for OU; Cowgirls split pair
Jocelyn Alo homered twice and Lynnsie Elam hit a solo shot to lead No. 2 Oklahoma to a 8-3 victory Friday afternoon in Sooners' opening game of the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tuscon, Arizona on the campus of the University of Arizona.
Alo broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Elam increased OU's lead to 6-3 with her solo blast in the fifth, then Alo delivered another two-run dinger in the sixth inning.
The Sooners met Northern Iowa in a late game Friday.
In Clearwater, Florida, Kiley Naomi hit a two-run homer and Carrie Eberle pitched a shutout to lift No. 16 Oklahoma State to a 2-0 win over No. 13 Minnesota Friday afternoon in the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational.
Eberle twice pitched out of bases loaded jams in the game. Naomi's third-inning homer was all the Cowgirls needed. Eberle pitched all seven innings, fanning four and allowing four hits.
In the nightcap, OSU was beaten 3-2 in eight innings by No. 18 Missouri. The Tigers scored the winning run in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch by reliever Kelly Maxwell, who entered in the seventh to bail OSU out of trouble.
OSU (5-3) took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. OSU starter Logan Simunek fanned a career-high seven batters through 6 1/3 innings before the Cowgirls unraveled. The Tigers scored twice on a ground out and an error to send the game into extra innings.
