Freshmen focus

OU’s freshmen made a fast impact in their first tournament, showing early signs that OU softball has reloaded from after graduating a big class last year.

Three true freshmen started for the Sooners in the season opener against Nevada, and several received playing time as pinch runners, hitters and relief pitchers.

Kinzie Hansen recorded eight RBI and a .533 batting average over the four-game stretch. Rylie Boone was in the leadoff spot for OU for three of the games. She finished with a .467 batting average. Pitcher Macy McAdoo appeared in three games, throwing a total of six innings, striking out three and giving up three hits.

Smooth Saile-ing

Senior pitcher Shannon Saile had four solid outings. She gave up six hits and one earned run and struck out 24 in 14 innings. Saile was OU’s most used pitcher over the weekend.

Saile is building off a junior season that saw her pitch in 30 games. She had a 1.42 earned run average last season.

Senior Giselle Juarez — who was OU’s most used pitcher last season — only appeared in one game over the weekend, throwing two innings and striking out three against BYU.

Spending time in Puerto Vallarta

While in Puerto Vallarta the Sooners spent time with local school children before tournament play started.

The team spent the morning hanging out and playing soccer and other games with kids at a Puerto Vallarta elementary school. They also passed out OU T-shirts to the kids and signed autographs.

Up next

The Sooners head to Tucson, Arizona, for the Hillenbrand Invitational. OU opens the weekend at 12:30 p.m. Friday against Bryant. The Sooners will then play Northern Iowa, Long Beach State and Arizona.
