Video: John Moreland delivers stripped-down performance of poignant ode 'In Times Between' from new album 'LP5,' out today

Watch acclaimed Tulsa singer-songwriter John Moreland deliver a poignant performance of his new song “In Times Between” alongside fellow Oklahoman musician and bandmate John Calvin Abney.

As previously reported, the achingly lovely ode is a tribute to their friend and fellow songwriter Chris Porter, an Alabama-born, Austin, Texas-based musician who was killed in a van accident in 2016.

"He was just such an awesome, beautiful person," Moreland told me in a recent interview. "He died on tour and then I was leaving for tour like two days later to go to Europe. So, I was in Europe just thinking about all of that and missing my friend. ... It's like every song I write, it's just kind of an attempt to be like, 'What is this? What am I feeling right now? Let me sort this s--t out a little bit.'"

As previously reported, "In Times Between" is included on Moreland's eagerly anticipated fifth solo album, out today via Old Omens/Thirty Tigers.

The spare music video strips away a few of the instrumental flourishes that Moreland included on the album version of "In Times Between," but it's likely very much like what you will hear if you catch Moreland and Abney on tour in support of the new album.

"I hate to sound boring, but (we're) just doing what we always do, trying to play the songs as good as we can," he said wryly in our recent interview. "We don't have any pyrotechnics or video displays or anything, but if you want to see a couple of dudes playing songs, we can offer that."

As previously reported, Moreland is planning a free in-store performance and signing at 6 p.m. today Oklahoma City's Guestroom Records, 3701 N Western Ave., to celebrate the new release. Only people who preordered the album online in advance can attend. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/GuestroomRecords.

Moreland will return to OKC in concert April 11 at the Tower Theatre, 425 NW 23. For tickets and information, go to www.towertheatreokc.com.
