House Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican resolution expressing disapproval of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for tearing up her copy of the State of the Union address given this week by President Donald Trump.

The resolution, by Texas Republican Rep. Kay Granger, cited the story of Oklahoman Christopher Hake, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq, and stories told by Trump of other Americans who served overseas, including a member of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Kelli and Gage Hake, the widow and son of Christopher Hake, were among Trump’s guests Tuesday night in the House chamber. The Hakes live in Stillwater.

Granger’s resolution states: “Whereas immediately following the address, while still presiding over the joint session, Speaker Pelosi ripped up an official copy of the President’s remarks, which contained the names and stories of these patriots who sacrificed so much for our country; and

“Whereas the conduct of Speaker Pelosi was a breach of decorum and degraded the proceedings of the joint session, to the discredit of the House: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives disapproves of the behavior of Speaker Pelosi during the joint session of Congress held on February 4, 2020.”

The House voted 224 to 193 to table Granger’s resolution, precluding debate. All of the Democrats present, joined by an independent, voted to table the resolution, while all the votes against the tabling motion were Republican.

Rep. Kendra Horn, D-Oklahoma City, who voted to table the resolution, said, “We can’t let ourselves be dragged into the mud. The bottom line is the President should have shaken her hand (before he began speaking). The Speaker shouldn’t have ripped up his speech. End of story. Let’s get back to business for Oklahoma.”
