Big 12 baseball tournament moves to Globe Life Field in 2022

Big 12 baseball is officially leaving Oklahoma City for at least three years.

The Big 12 conference announced Wednesday morning that the annual conference tournament will move inside to the Texas Rangers’ new Globe Life Field for three seasons beginning in 2022, with OKC’s Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark remaining the host this season and in 2021.

Twenty of the 23 tournaments have been played in Bricktown, with the Rangers hosting in their former ballpark in 2003-04. The tournament was held in Tulsa in 2015.

“Oklahoma City is proud to host the Big 12 Baseball Championship again in 2021,” said Sue Hollenbeck, director of sport business at the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“We are very honored to have a long history and a great partnership with the Big 12 and look forward to another exciting and successful event this year and next. OKC looks forward to the championship returning to the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the future.”

Oklahoma State won last season’s tournament, bringing in big crowds. In two years, those crowds will be in a climate-controlled stadium with a retractable roof.

“The Big 12 Championship has always been one of the best weeks of baseball anywhere in the country,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said in a release. “It’s NCAA Regional-caliber baseball one week before the tournament, always fierce and great preparation for the road to Omaha.

“Oklahoma City has hosted the event with tremendous class and hospitality. The people in Bricktown welcome the teams in and treat us like gold. I’m sure we will have the same experience in Arlington as the tournament changes venues. We are very fortunate to have great venues like Bricktown and Arlington welcome us in.”

Oklahoma coach Skip Johnson also said in the release that playing in a new MLB stadium is exciting.

“Oklahoma City has been an incredible site for the Big 12 Championship for so many years and we look forward to continuing that relationship,” he said. “It will be an unbelievable opportunity for our team to play at Globe Life Field and a unique chance to play our conference tournament at a major league ballpark.

“We’ve been fortunate to compete in every Big 12 Championship so far and we will hopefully continue to be a part of this outstanding event.”
