'They found me, and I was knocking them down': Brady Manek, Sooners bounce back with Bedlam rout

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s Brady Manek came down with the rebound after a missed layup by Oklahoma State late in the first half.

Harmon dished it back to Manek who took one dribble to his left before shooting a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

Splash.

Manek had already turned and started running back on defense before the ball went through the basket.

The junior forward was all over the court Saturday in OU's 82-69 win over Oklahoma State in Bedlam. He led the way for the Sooners early as they came out with a lot of energy bouncing back from a tough loss to Kansas State. Manek has been one of Oklahoma’s most solid players in conference play, entering the day as the third-leading scorer in the Big 12.

“He’s been shooting like that for us for a while,” OU coach Lon Kruger said. “Looking to find him, did today, and he stepped up and delivered.”

The Harrah native fell just short of a new career high on Saturday, scoring 30 points while shooting over 60% from the field. He also tied his career high for 3-point shots made in a game with seven.

It was a welcomed sight for Manek and the Sooners after coming off an ugly loss at Kansas State. Manek scored just five points Wednesday night in Manhattan, but he was able to turn it around quickly.

“You don’t want to do it again,” Manek said. “I wouldn’t want to have a game like we did at Kansas State two times in a row. Everybody has bad nights, but that was a really bad one. I think everybody here wanted to bounce back.”

Manek couldn’t miss in the first half. He made 3-point shots all around the arc as his teammates kept finding him. He had 22 points before halftime. His performance electrified the 10,186 fans in the Lloyd Noble Center.

“At that point, we want to keep giving it to him, and he can get up as many as he wants,” OU guard Austin Reaves said.

The Cowboys (10-11, 0-8 Big 12) focused on Manek more in the second half, not allowing him to be as effective as he had been earlier in the game. That freed up opportunities Reaves and Alondes Williams, who finished with 19 and 12 points respectively.

But Manek’s production early allowed Oklahoma (14-7, 4-4 Big 12) to jump out to an early lead and remain comfortable in the first Bedlam game of the season.

“I would just say we were attacking the defense well,” Manek said. “I think we were moving it well. I happened to be the guy who was open a lot of the time.

“They found me, and I was knocking them down.”
