Bedlam basketball: Officials reviews go Sooners' way, frustrate Cowboys

NORMAN — The replay monitor got quite the workout.

Five times the officials went to replay during Oklahoma’s 82-69 Bedlam win on Saturday, often overturning their original decision.

Twice, officials reversed fouls on OU.

With 17:21 left in the opening half, Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Laurent was hit in the face by OU’s Brady Manek, who had just caught a pass. Officials initially called it a foul on Manek and went to review if it was a flagrant foul. Instead, they assessed the foul to Laurent for being in Manek’s player cylinder.

The same type of play happened with 9:16 remaining, this time with OSU’s Yor Anei catching a pass, turning and hitting Manek in the face with an elbow. Officials assessed a foul to Manek, but after review ruled a flagrant foul on Anei.

OSU coach Mike Boynton argued — to no avail — as he tossed his tie.

“From my vantage point, it looked like a very similar play to the one that happened at the very start of the game,” Boynton said. “I'll go back and look.

“The officials work hard. I'm assuming they feel like they made the right call. In the moment, I didn't have a chance to see the review, so I don't I don't know what happened exactly.”

At the time, OSU trailed 65-49. Manek made one free shot and then a 3-pointer, igniting a 49-second 6-0 run for the Sooners.

“It was an intense game,” OSU senior Thomas Dziagwa said. “We’ve got to stay locked in through the ups and downs. That’s just on us.”
