OU football: Sooners hire Arizona State's Jamar Cain as outside linebackers coach
NORMAN — OU's coaching staff appears to be complete.
Arizona State defensive line coach Jamar Cain will take over as the Sooners' outside linebackers coach, according to multiple reports.
Cain confirmed the move to the Arizona Republic.
Cain replaces Ruffin McNeill, who recently stepped away from coaching to return to North Carolina to care for his elderly father.
Cain spent just one season on Herm Edwards' staff with the Sun Devils, building a reputation as a strong recruiter. Cain helped Arizona State put together a 2020 recruiting class ranked No. 25 in Rivals.com's rankings.
While Cain has never worked directly with Sooners defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, there is a connection through former Wyoming coach Dave Christensen.
Grinch was the Cowboys' defensive backs coach from 2009-11. Cain spent the 2013 season as Wyoming's defensive line coach and eventually interim defensive coordinator.
After that, he spent three seasons at Football Championship Subdivision powerhouse North Dakota State.
Cain spent 2017-18 at Fresno State before moving on to Arizona.
Cain's hiring, which hasn't been officially announced, gives the Sooners a pair of assistant coach hires this week who spent last season in the Grand Canyon State.
Earlier this week, former Sooners running back DeMarco Murray was named OU's running backs coach after spending a season at Arizona.
