DEAR MELBA: Here's an answer to ideas about how to help our neighbors. To help someone you know who can't attend church or Sunday School because they're sick — stop by and give them a scripture verse that might make them feel better.

— A Reader

DEAR READERS: While eating out with a friend recently, a chocolate pecan pie was served. It might have been made from the following recipe which I got in a cooking class I attended years ago taught by Kevin Garvin.

•1 1/2 cups maple syrup

•6 eggs

•3/4 cup sugar

•1/3 cup melted butter

•3 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted

•2 cups pecan pieces

•1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell

Heat oven to 350 F. In medium mixing bowl, combine syrup, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. Mix until smooth. Stir in pecan pieces. Pour into pie shell and bake 30-to-40 minutes. Cool before serving.

Another reader recently told me she had made a chocolate pie using a recipe from my column years ago and it was wonderful. I think it's worth repeating. It was originally shared by Charlotte Dodson, of Oklahoma City, who wrote, "Here is the chocolate pie we served at Dodson's Cafeteria years ago."

•2 cups milk

•1 pound miniature marshmallows

•1/4 teaspoon salt

•2 teaspoons vanilla

•2 cups canned whipped cream

•4 squares unsweetened chocolate, grated

•1 cup chopped pecans

•2 graham cracker pie crusts

In large saucepan, heat milk. Add marshmallows, stirring to dissolve. Add salt and vanilla. Cool.

When cool, fold in whipped cream, grated chocolate and pecans. Stir and pour into graham cracker crusts. Sprinkle with coconut. Makes 2 pies.
