Katz Drug sit-in group serves as honorary marshals for MLK holiday parade

Waving to crowds lining the streets of downtown Oklahoma City, a distinguished group of men and women sat in stylish black limousines that rolled along in Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade.

In 1958, they sat in very different seats, far from any honors or accolades.

Serving as honorary parade marshals on Monday, they were youths when they sat down in whites-only restaurants and stores in a nonviolent protest of unjust Jim Crow laws.

As members of the NAACP Youth Council led by civil rights icon Clara Luper, they earned Monday's recognition by their courageous actions more than 60 years ago.

"I feel honored. This experience, this event is priceless," said Joyce Henderson, a veteran of the sit-ins and longtime educator.

Henderson, 73, said metro-area children and teens attending the holiday activities typically only read about the Civil Rights Movement, but seeing the actual participants up close and hearing their stories "brings history to life."

"Any time we can remember where we've come from, we can do better as we go forward. We need to keep the hope alive," she said.

Several of the civil rights activists spoke at the holiday program at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, one of several activities coordinated by the Oklahoma City Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition. The group shared recognition as honorary parade marshals with the NAACP Minute Men Commandos who guarded the young sit-in participants.

The holiday program that preceded the parade included music, prayer and a panel discussion about civil rights activities of yesteryear. "40 Years — Better Together" served as the event theme.

Roosevelt Milton, Oklahoma City NAACP president emeritus, talked about forming the Martin Luther King Holiday Coalition 40 years ago, before the King holiday was designated by the federal government or the state of Oklahoma. He said the group's first gathering drew about 35 people to honor King on the south steps of the State Capitol.

"I knew it wasn't the most popular thing to do, but look around," he said, acknowledging the large crowd at the church.

Marilyn Luper Hildreth, 71, Clara Luper's daughter, spoke about being one of the 13 original participants to take a seat at the whites-only lunch counter at Oklahoma City's downtown Katz Drug Store in 1958.

"As a child in Oklahoma City, I thought the whole world was segregated because we couldn't live past Seventh Street. We had to eat from a brown paper sack behind the restaurants," she said. "Our story is one of hope. It was started by a group of young people who wanted change."

Hildreth's cousins Betty Germany, 79, and Richard Brown, 77, were also among the original 13 to take a seat at Katz.

"It's uplifting just to see how the people react (now). They want to see somebody that had a struggle and did it peacefully," Brown said.

Germany shared similar comments.

"I think it's great after all the years that they've had the march and everything. I remember my aunt Mrs. Luper and this (Monday's program) is beautiful. It's emotional," she said, with tears in her eyes.

Ayanna Najuma, 69, the youngest of the sit-in participants, said she was honored to be a parade marshal. She said the fight for equality and justice continues.

"I think there's a lot of work that needs to be done. I started sitting in at the age of 7 and sat in until the Civil Rights Act was passed (in 1964,) but now that I'm almost 70, I feel that I'm having to roll my sleeves up even more so to motivate and inspire the young people to continue to work," she said.

"I take my hat off to everyone who showed up today and I hope that they continue to see the value in Dr. King's message and that they see the importance of making Oklahoma better."

Meanwhile, Connie Carolina, 62, and her sister Dena Carolina, 45, said they had been coming to the annual King holiday program and other activities for several decades.

"It inspires me," she said. "We've been coming for the least 30 years. Each time they have a speaker that talks about current events and the current situation, but they always bring it back to Dr. King."
