High school boys cross country: Mustang’s Gabe Simonsen finishes fifth at USATF junior cross country championships

Mustang junior Gabe Simonsen took fifth place Saturday in the 8-kilometer race at USA Track and Field’s junior cross country championships in San Diego.

Simonsen’s performance earned him a spot on Team USA’s U-20 lineup at the Pan American Cross Country Cup, which is set for Feb. 29 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Competing against 22 high school and college runners, Simonsen completed Saturday’s run in 27 minutes, 14 seconds. The top six runners qualified for the Pan American event.

Simonsen has won two straight Class 6A state titles. He was The Oklahoman’s All-City Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2018.
