Sooners' K Gabe Brkic named Freshman All-American

NORMAN — Gabe Brkic wasn't OU's kicker to start the season.

Now, he's a Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American.

Brkic took over the Sooners' kicking duties at the start of Big 12 play and was perfect, making all 17 of his field goals and all 51 of his extra points through the rest of the season.

No kicker in OU history had finished a season with a perfect field-goal percentage.

Four of Brkic's field goals were longer than 40 yards. He made four field goals against Kansas State to keep the Sooners in the game in the second half.

Brkic's most memorable kick came at Baylor on Nov. 16, when he hit a 31-yarder with 1:45 remaining to put the Sooners ahead during their historic 34-31 come-from-behind victory.

He's the third OU kicker to earn FWAA Freshman All-America honors, joining Michael Hunnicutt in 2011 and Austin Seibert in 2105.

Oklahoma has had at least one player on the Freshman All-America team in each of the last three seasons and six of the last seven seasons.
